How to Get Your Business Into Google's Map Pack (The 3-Pack That Actually Drives Calls)

You've probably seen it a thousand times without thinking about it. You search "plumber near me" or "best pizza in Clearwater," and Google shows you three businesses on a map right at the top of the page — above the regular search results.

That's the Google Map Pack. And if your business isn't in it, you're invisible to a huge chunk of local searchers.

What Is the Map Pack, Exactly?

The Map Pack (sometimes called the Local Pack or 3-Pack) is the box that shows up at the top of Google search results for local queries. It displays a map with three business listings, each showing the business name, star rating, address, hours, and a link to call or get directions.

It's prime real estate. According to recent data, roughly 42% of people who do a local search click on one of those three Map Pack results. That's almost half of all local search traffic going to just three businesses.

If you're a service business in Pinellas or Pasco County, this is where you want to be.

Why Most Local Businesses Don't Show Up

Here's the thing — Google doesn't randomly pick those three businesses. It uses a specific set of ranking factors to decide who gets in. The three big ones are:

You can't control distance. But you can absolutely control relevance and prominence. And that's where most businesses drop the ball.

6 Things You Can Do Right Now

1. Complete Every Section of Your Google Business Profile

This sounds basic, but most profiles are half-finished. Fill out every single field — business description, services, products, attributes, hours (including special hours), and your service area. Google rewards completeness.

If you haven't touched your profile since you first claimed it, it's time.

2. Pick the Right Primary Category

Your primary category is the single biggest ranking factor for the Map Pack. "General contractor" is not the same as "kitchen remodeler." Be as specific as possible to match what your ideal customers are actually searching for.

You can also add secondary categories, but the primary one carries the most weight.

3. Get More (and Better) Reviews

Reviews affect both your ranking and your click-through rate. A business with 47 five-star reviews is going to outrank a business with 6 reviews — and get more clicks when it does show up.

Ask happy customers to leave a Google review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link to your review page. Respond to every review, good and bad. Google notices the engagement.

4. Keep Your NAP Consistent Everywhere

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references your business information across the web — your website, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories, the BBB. If your phone number is different on Yelp than it is on your Google profile, that's a trust signal problem.

Audit your listings and make sure they all match exactly.

5. Add Photos Regularly

Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to their website than businesses without. Upload real photos of your work, your team, your storefront, your projects. Skip the stock photos — Google and your potential customers can both tell the difference.

Adding new photos every couple of weeks signals to Google that your business is active.

6. Build Local Citations and Links

Citations are mentions of your business on other websites — directories, local news sites, chamber of commerce pages. Links from local, relevant websites tell Google your business has authority in your area.

Join your local chamber. Get listed in industry directories. Sponsor a local event and get a link on their website. These small efforts compound over time.

The Bottom Line

Getting into the Map Pack isn't magic. It's a combination of having a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, earning real reviews from real customers, and building your online presence consistently.

The businesses that show up in those top three spots aren't always the biggest or the best — they're the ones that put in the work to be visible.
