Q4 Starts in Five Days. Is Your Website Ready?
October 1 is five days away. Q4 is the busiest search quarter of the year for most local service businesses, and if your website isn't ready for the traffic it's about to get, you'll watch it land and leave.
This isn't just about holiday shopping. In Florida, the fourth quarter brings snowbirds back, school routines settle in, and homeowners start checking off the project list they put off all summer. Searches for cleaning, landscaping, renovation, pest control, and home services spike in October and don't let up until January.
Here's what to check before that traffic arrives.
Update Anything With a Date
Read through your site the way a new visitor would. Anything that says "summer special," references last year, or includes a date that's already passed quietly signals that nobody's minding the store. It's a small thing but it costs you trust. Fix it in 20 minutes before October hits.
Same goes for your Google Business Profile. Check that your hours are current, add a note about any seasonal availability, and make sure your holiday hours are already scheduled. Google warns searchers when your hours "may differ" during holidays. That warning sends people to your competitor.
Check How Fast Your Site Loads on a Phone
Q4 traffic is mobile-heavy. People are searching on lunch breaks, in parking lots, in waiting rooms. If your site takes longer than three seconds to load on a cell connection, a significant chunk of those visitors will bounce before they see anything.
Test it yourself. Open your site on your phone using mobile data (not WiFi) and count. If it feels slow to you, it's definitely slow to them. Google's PageSpeed Insights tool will give you a free score at pagespeed.web.dev and flag the specific issues slowing things down.
The most common mobile speed killers on small business sites are oversized images, unoptimized fonts, and scripts loading before the page can display anything. Most of these are fixable without a full rebuild.
Make Your Phone Number Impossible to Miss
This sounds basic, but you'd be surprised. Your phone number needs to appear above the fold on every page and it needs to be a tap-to-call link. Visitors on mobile should never have to remember a number, switch apps, and retype it. One tap, phone starts dialing.
If your current site buries the number in the footer, or it's an image someone can't click, you're adding friction right at the moment someone is ready to call you.
Review Your Most-Visited Pages
Pull up Google Search Console or whatever analytics you use and look at which pages are getting the most traffic. Those are the pages you want sharp before October. Read each one and ask: Does this page tell someone clearly what I do, where I do it, and how to get in touch? If not, tighten it up.
Pay extra attention to your service pages. If you're a cleaning company in Pasco County, someone searching "house cleaning Wesley Chapel" should land on a page that specifically mentions Wesley Chapel, not a generic services list.
Add Something Seasonal Without Overcommitting
You don't need a full redesign. A simple banner or short paragraph that acknowledges the season can increase conversion rates because it signals the site is current and the business is active.
Something like: "Booking through December, call now for availability" does two things. It creates urgency without being pushy, and it tells visitors you're busy enough that they shouldn't wait. That's a trust signal and a soft CTA at the same time.
Check the Most Important 10 Seconds
Open your homepage on an incognito window like you've never seen the site before. You have 10 seconds. Ask yourself:
- Do I know what this business does?
- Do I know where they operate?
- Do I know how to contact them?
- Does this look like a business I would trust?
If any of those answers aren't obvious in 10 seconds, you have work to do before October 1.
Q4 won't wait. The businesses that do this kind of check now will convert more of that traffic. The ones that don't will watch visitors bounce and never know why.
