This Week in Tampa Bay: Jazz Hits Coachman Park, Rays Fight for the Pennant, and the Bolts Are Back (October 14-20)

Mid-October in Tampa Bay hits differently. The humidity breaks, the calendar fills up, and sports and live music collide in ways that remind you why people move here on purpose. This week has a lot going on.

Clearwater Jazz Holiday, 47th Year

The Clearwater Jazz Holiday turns 47 this year, and it's running Thursday through Sunday, October 15-18, at Coachman Park on the waterfront. That's tonight through the weekend.

This one's been going since 1980. It started as a few concerts on the back of a flatbed truck and grew into one of Florida's best outdoor music events. Four nights, multiple stages, headliners on the Tampa Bay Times Stage, and a lot of good reasons to be on the Clearwater waterfront after dark.

Thursday night's headliner is Chris Botti, the trumpet player who's spent twenty years selling out concert halls and collaborating with everyone from Sting to Frank Sinatra's orchestra. If you've never seen him live, his set runs late and the playing is genuinely worth the trip.

The rest of the weekend brings different sounds and different crowds. There are side stages with more variety, and October is value season on the Gulf beaches, so if you wanted an excuse to book a night in Clearwater, this is a solid one. Tickets and full lineup at clearwaterjazz.com.

Rays Headed to the World Series? Maybe.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians are locked in the ALCS, with the series tied at one game apiece after Tampa Bay took Game 2 on Tuesday night. Freddy Peralta and Liam Hicks combined to hold Cleveland to one run in a 3-1 win that evened things up.

The Rays were the best team in the American League all year. Now they're four wins away from a World Series berth, and the series is coming back to St. Pete for Games 3 and 4. If you want in, check the Rays' site for ticket availability. Games 3 and 4 at Tropicana Field this week are the ones to get.

Cleveland's a good team and the Guardians don't go away quietly. But the Rays have home field for these middle games, and this roster is built for exactly this kind of series. Keep an eye on the score.

Lightning Season Is Here

The Tampa Bay Lightning kicked off the 2026-27 season this week. The NHL expanded to 84 games this year, and the Bolts are starting what everyone in Tampa expects to be a deep playoff run.

Home games are back at Benchmark International Arena. If you haven't caught a Lightning game in person, the arena experience in Tampa is one of the better ones in the league. They take presentation seriously, and the crowd is loud from puck drop.

Check the Lightning's schedule for home dates this week and through November before the good seats are gone.

Curtis Hixon and the Downtown Calendar

Rock the Park ran Wednesday night at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park on the river. It's a quarterly event that pops up in the Rialto Theater Alleyway from 6 to 9 p.m. and draws a solid mix of downtown residents and people who just want to be outside when the weather finally cooperates.

If you missed it, the next one hits in early November. Curtis Hixon stays busy in October, and the park itself is worth a lap on a cool evening even when there's nothing scheduled.

A Reminder About Supporting Local

All of this happens around small businesses. The restaurants filling up before the Jazz Holiday, the bars near Coachman, the shops on Cleveland Street, the places around Tropicana Field on game nights. That's where October's money actually goes in this region.

If you own a local business and your website doesn't reflect what you actually do or where you actually are, this is the time of year when that costs you. People are searching. Visitors are in town. Regulars are looking for somewhere to go after the game.

Your Google Business Profile, your hours, your photos, and your phone number should all be accurate and up to date right now. If they're not, that's worth an hour of your time this week.
