This Week in Tampa Bay: Baseball, Beer, and the Gulf at Its Best (April 7–13)

Spring is hitting its stride across Pinellas and Pasco County, and the timing couldn't be better. The water is warming up, the festivals are in full swing, and the fishing is about as good as it gets all year. If you've been waiting for a reason to get outside, this is the week.

Here's what's worth your time from April 7 through 13.

Tampa Bay Rays Are Home at Tropicana Field

The Rays are back in St. Pete this week for a home stand, and with the renovations to Tropicana Field still generating buzz, now's a solid time to catch a game before summer arrives and the humidity takes over. There's nothing quite like an afternoon at the Trop — grab a Cuban sandwich from the concourse, find your section, and settle in.

Check the Rays schedule for this week's matchups and first pitch times. Tuesday and Wednesday games tend to be the least crowded if you want elbow room.

Clearwater Beach: Still One of the Best Places to Be on a Tuesday

The Sugar Sand Festival just wrapped up at Pier 60, but Clearwater Beach doesn't slow down. Pier 60's nightly Sunset Celebration is still running every evening from two hours before sunset until two hours after — local artists, street performers, and a front-row view of one of the best sunsets on the Gulf Coast. It's free, it's consistent, and it never gets old.

If you want to stretch your legs, the Pinellas Trail extension along Clearwater's waterfront is a low-key morning walk worth doing before the beach crowds show up.

Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks — Greek Food, Fresh Air, and History

If you haven't spent a morning at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks recently, put it on the list. The stretch of Dodecanese Boulevard along the water is a mix of Greek bakeries, sponge shops, fresh seafood, and dockside restaurants that's been operating the same way for generations.

Spring is a great time to visit before summer tourist season peaks. Grab a spinach pie or a piece of baklava, walk the docks, and watch the sponge boats come and go. The Tarpon Springs Aquarium is also right in the area and worth a quick stop if you have kids in tow.

Dunedin Craft Beer Scene Is Wide Open

Dunedin's Main Street is one of the more underrated stretches in Pinellas County, and the craft beer scene there is genuinely good. Dunedin Brewery — one of Florida's oldest craft breweries — typically has live music on weekends and a rotating tap list worth exploring.

This time of year they're usually rolling out spring seasonal releases. It's a walkable downtown, so park once and bounce between the brewery, the local shops, and whatever food looks good. Casual, no-agenda afternoon material.

Spring Fishing Tournaments: Red Snapper and Tarpon Season Incoming

If you're a fisher or you know someone who is, mid-April is one of the best windows on Tampa Bay. Red snapper season is open on the Gulf side, grouper regulations have loosened up for spring, and tarpon are starting to show up in the passes — especially at Boca Ciega Bay and around Fort DeSoto.

Several local marinas and fishing clubs in Pinellas and Pasco run spring tournaments throughout April. Check with local tackle shops like Gander RV and Outdoors in Clearwater or hit the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission site for current bag limits and tournament listings before you head out.

St. Pete Saturday Morning Market

This one runs every week, but it earns a mention every time. The Saturday Morning Market at Al Lang Stadium goes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and has been a St. Pete staple for years. Local produce, handmade goods, food vendors, and usually a live musician or two set up near the entrance.

Go early, grab a coffee from one of the vendors, and take your time walking through. It's one of those things locals stop appreciating until a friend from out of town visits and loses their mind over it.

Get Out on the Water: Kayaking and Paddleboard Season Is Here

The calm, shallow waters around Weedon Island Preserve and Fort De Soto Park are ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding right now. Water temperatures are climbing into the low 70s, the wind is manageable most mornings, and the wildlife — herons, osprey, dolphins if you're lucky — is active.

Several outfitters around St. Pete and Clearwater rent paddleboards and kayaks by the hour. Weedon Island has a dedicated kayak launch and mangrove trail that's worth the trip even if you've done it before. Go before 10 a.m. to beat the wind.

The Bottom Line

This week has a little bit of everything — baseball, beaches, craft beer, Greek food, fishing, and waterfront markets. Spring in Tampa Bay doesn't last forever, and the stretch between now and Memorial Day is genuinely the best stretch of the year to be outside.

Get out and use it.
